Suntel extends its support to helping growth of ICT
Sponsoring the National IT-BPO Capacity Summit 2007
Suntel will reiterate its commitment to the country’s ICT industry by supporting the National ICT Capacity Summit 2007 organised by ICTA in collaboration with the Presidents Secretariat and patronage of the Education Ministry. Suntel coming in as a Gold Sponsor to the event will stage its presence at the two day National IT-BPO career guidance fair scheduled to take place from the 1-2nd September at the BMICH, Colombo.
The ICT capacity building Summit is in keeping with the government’s initiative to reap the maximum benefits of existing talent within the country and upscale the professional talent pool to include experts who are beyond mere ‘Software Engineers’ in the IT field. The summit will mark the launch of a policy document setting guidelines and a frame work incorporating each stake holder’s role in this exercise. The concerted effort led by the industry will focus on specialised training, particularly human capital development to address the potential talent shortage and issues that have to be overcome if Sri Lanka were to be on par with their regional counterparts.
The career guidance fair will target school leavers, University Students, Teachers, IT consultants, Career consultants & IT stakeholders. The guidance fair will create interest and awareness among students on career opportunities in the ICT industry and is believed to draw in over 3,000 participants each day.
Suntel will operate a unique stall at the exhibition, built around a home theme, where visitors will have the opportunity of experiencing state-of–the-art telecommunications solutions. Suntel will also showcase their many home based products catering to all telecommunication needs, including home broadband, Wireless internet access at home (WiFi) and E- Medicine which caters to the rural areas of Sri Lanka.
Suntel is at the front line of ICT service delivery in the country and as such, is committed to empowering the entire industry to reach new heights in quality and technology. By supporting industry events such as the National ICT Capacity Summit and past events as Tech Ed and INFOTEL, Suntel hopes to perform its part in propelling Sri Lanka to the next generation in ICT services, while creating a strong image for the country in the international ICT footprint.
Jeremy Huxtable, Managing Director of Suntel said “Sri Lanka has the potential to compete at the very highest level on the international ICT arena – the talent and knowledge we have within our vast pool of human resources is second to none. At Suntel, it is our firm belief that the creation of opportunities which offer the right level of exposure, will fast track Sri Lanka’s course towards achieving benchmark status in ICT services in the region. By extending our support to The National IT-BPO Capacity Summit and National IT-BPO career guidance fair, we hope to empower ICT professionals and students with experiences that enable them to reach new vistas of knowledge and creativity in ICT.”
In its endeavor to drive the ICT industry forward, Suntel has made huge strides in bringing ICT to the masses – over the past three years. The company has rolled out a CDMA network complemented by affordable purchasing schemes and attractive tariff plans to facilitate its goal of “a phone in every Sri Lankan home by the year 2010”. Suntel’s CDMA network has penetrated into the rural areas of the country, which had for many years been unable to access telecommunications infrastructure. Suntel has also been at the cutting edge of consumer-friendly ICT service provision. The company operates a series of WiFi hotspots at convenient locations in Colombo, while providing easy internet access via its Suntel WoW ISP.
Suntel is a joint venture company that brings together the resources and expertise of Swedish telecom giant overseas Telecom AB, Metrocorp (Pvt) Ltd., Townsend Limited of Hong Kong, the National Development Bank, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) - a member of the World Bank Group.
The combination of technical and operational expertise supported by a sound financial base has helped create a company which is committed to being Sri Lanka’s preferred telecommunication service provider, through service excellence and cost-effective delivery.
