Eight junior shuttlers for inaugural Asian c’ships


A ten-member junior badminton team is expected to take part at the 1st West Asian Junior Badminton Championship scheduled to be held from September 6 to 10 in Tehran, Iran.


“Five boys and five girls of under 19 age category have been selected for this tour based on their performances after the trial matches,” said team manager Jagath Patabendi.


Two shuttlers from Ananda College - Nuwan Hettiarachchi and Nayanakantha Wijesekera are in the boy’s team while two girls from Musaeus College - Subodha Dahanayake and Akila Jayamanne are in the girl’s team.


The junior shuttlers from West Asian countries will take part at this tournament and it would be a good opportunity for our juniors to have international exposure. They also have a good chance to win the matches, according to the manager.


The team: (Boys): R.S. Kasun (St. John’s, Nugegoda), Nuwan Hettiarachchi (Ananda), Nayanakantha Wijesekera (Ananda), R.S. Dahanayake (Dharmaraja College, Kandy), Chamika Manawadu (Royal).
(Girls): Subodha Dahanayake (Musaeus), Gayani Perera (Anula M.V, Nugegoda), Dinusha Perera (Holy Cross, Gampaha), Chamika Madurawa (Mahamaya, Kandy ), Akila Jayamanne (Musaeus), Jagath Patabendi (Manager), Buddika Fonseka (Lady Chaperon).
