Athletics manager confident of ‘gold’


Manager of Sri Lanka’s team for the 69th Singapore Open Athletics Championships in Singapore Susantha Fernando expressed confidence that they could win gold medals in all the four events they were participating.


“I feel it is a possible goal to achieve. This is also the first time in history that we are exposing a second string side to this competition. I have plenty of confidence on these youngsters,” Fernando told ‘The Bottom Line’.


The seven-member team including two girls and five boys leave on Friday for the tournament which will be worked off on September 8 and 9. More than ten countries are taking part.


The Sri Lanka team: R.A.K.P. Madumanthi (Open)– high jump, Harshani Wijesinghe (Keegalu Balika) – 100m hurdles, K.D. Abeysinghe (Walala A. Ratnayake Central College) – 800m, G.J. Weerasinghe (Walala A. Ratnayake Central College) – 4X400m relay, S.G. Ratnayake (Open) – 4X400m, U.G. Wickramasinghe (St. Anthony’s College, Kandy) – 400m, 4x400m, Nuwan Abeywickrama (St. Benedict’s College) – 4x400m.
