Nawaloka Hospitals celebrates their 22 year landmark with Rs. 1.3 b. expansion nearing completion


Nawaloka Hospitals, the leaders amongst private sector healthcare providers, will celebrate 22 years of unparalleled service in the local healthcare industry this month with its Rs. 1.3 billion expansion project nearing completion.


“To be the hospital of tomorrow whilst maintaining leadership and excellence in the healthcare industry is our vision, with a mission to provide the best healthcare to the needy in a cost effective, timely and professional manner,” Nawaloka Hospitals Deputy Chairman Jayantha Dharmadasa said.


The hospital’s ongoing expansion, costing Rs 1.3 billion when completed will house amongst other facilities, a well equipped emergency treatment unit, an OPD laboratory, pharmacy, consultation rooms, café, ATMs, a maternity department complete with surgical theatre, delivery room as well as private delivery rooms and an Out Bound Unit for patients with post pregnancy defects, a neo natal unit, a MICU (Medical Intensive Care Unit) with the latest facilities, a Sleep Lab (snoring monitoring facility), dialysis unit, isolation room, 6 ultra modern surgical theatres, a modern fertility centre, Nephrology unit, as well as a series of villas and suites to cater to the more fastidious patient .


The villas and suites have been designed by a panel of internationally recognized architects and consultants who specialie in medical requirements, and each and every villa and suite will have a water front view incorporating an aerial view of Colombo city.
Nawaloka Hospitals will score another first when they become the first hospital (the new extension) in Sri Lanka to be equipped with glass panel elevators, while a multi storied car park with parking for 400 vehicles will also be available.


The hospital’s anniversary celebrations will include a 5% discount for patients for a period of one month on rooms as well as Lasik eye surgery and the releasing of 1500 balloons with gift vouchers.


A staff sports meet, prize giving, service excellence awards for staff members who have completed 22 years of service (54 such employees will be rewarded), a musical show, as well as the traditional capping ceremony for student nurses who have accomplished their 3 years in-house training at the hospital will all form part of the celebrations.
During the course of this year, Nawaloka Hospitals were the first to introduce the Philips FD 10- Angiography system with state of the art technology . In addition they were also the first to introduce a Comprehensive Polysomnography System, as well as initiating a state of the art pulmonary testing facility.


“During the last financial year alone Nawaloka Hospitals invested a total of Rs 400 million in upgrading its facilities as well as in new equipment,” Nawaloka Hospitals Director and General Manager Prof. Lal Chandrasena said. He added that the hospital’s nurse to patient ratio currently stood at 1 to 4. “The Hospital’s Heart Centre performed approximately 800 cardiac surgeries in the last year, while total admissions stood at 30410, Channeling 529,853, Lab tests 476121 and MRI and CT scanning ended up at 14489. 356 Lasik surgeries were also successfully performed, while Nawaloka Metropolis Laboratories are successfully conducting laboratory tests which hitherto could be undertaken only in Europe and Singapore.”
Established in 1985 as the first fully fledged private hospital in Sri Lanka, Nawaloka Hospitals have many firsts to their credit including the setting up of the very first Intensive Care Unit in a private hospital, the first ever CT Scanner, the first MRI Scanner, the first Mammography Unit, first Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery Unit in a private hospital, as well as the first Cardiac Cauterization Laboratory.


Nawaloka Hospitals were also the first to perform Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery in Sri Lanka, and is the only hospital to be ISO certified. A brand new state-of-the-art chapter in the local healthcare industry will be unfolded with the hospital’s new wing which is scheduled to be completed in April 2008. Plans for the future include a hospital within a hospital concept, with Nawaloka Hospital’s villas and suites playing a key role in this concept.
