Mannar Bishop wants immediate restoration of civil administration

Mannar Bishop Rt. Rev. Rayappu Joseph has appealed to President Mahinda Rajapaksa to restore civil administration in Mannar, and to dispatch essential items immediately to the already starving, displaced people in that region.

In a letter addressed to the President, the Bishop has suggested that the security forces could assist the civil administration of the district of Mannar to send food items by sea, and also to evacuate the people from Mullikulam to Chilawathurai by sea, and from there to a safer location in Mannar by land.

He has said that the 22 kilo meter road to Mullikulam from Chilawathurai on the western coastal line of the district is said to be unsafe for travelling due to the presence of land mines. He further added that the people of Mullikulam needed food and medicine urgently, and also needed to be immediately evacuated to a safer location.

He has said the only way to do this was via the sea route.

The letter sent last week stated that, following the entry of the Sri Lanka Army into Chilawathurai and Arippu on September 1, and resultant evacuation of the people of these villages by the security forces for safety to Nanattan and Murunkan, the people of Mullikulam remain isolated, with no means of food or medical supply, besides being placed in a dangerous and vulnerable environment.

“Urgent action needs to be taken to save and rescue these innocent civilians,” the Bishop has informed the President.
