CAA Chairman summons special meeting to tender resignation

Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Chairman Sarath Wijesinghe has summoned a special board meeting today, where he is likely to tender his resignation.

On Monday Wijesinghe was found guilty of contempt of the Supreme Court for disregarding court proceedings regarding two fundamental rights violation petitions filed by Laugfs Gas Ltd and Dialog TV.

Meanwhile, Wijesinghe’s future as the next President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) now hangs in the balance following Monday’s development, sources told The Bottom Line. The CAA Chairman was set to contest the post of President BASL at the forthcoming election scheduled for next year.

When The Bottom Line contacted Wijesinghe, he refused to speak to the media blaming it as the main cause for the present situation he was in. He however maintained that he will speak to the media after September 24th, the scheduled day for the next hearing on the court case.
“If I say anything now then that will also go against me on the 24th,” he said.

High drama prevailed in the court when Wijesinghe collapsed and fainted while Chief Justice Sarath N.Silva was delivering the order. The CAA Chairman who appeared in court on notice tendered an unqualified apology to all parties in open court. The court granted Wijesinghe two weeks to tender his resignation as CAA Chairman. The case will be taken up on September 24 for sentence. (AE)
