CIMA Mastercourse on new management model beyond budgeting

CIMA Sri Lanka will be holding two Mastercouses examining a new management model which goes beyond budgeting. The courses will take place on 19 and 20 September at CIMA Sri Lanka Division and will be led by Robin Fraser, BSc(Eng), FCMA, FIMC, co-founder and director of the Beyond Budgeting Roundtable (BBRT) and co-author of the book ‘Beyond Budgeting’ published by Harvard Business School Press, 2003.

Split into two courses, Beyond budgeting: devolved leadership, and Beyond budgeting: adaptive performance management, the programmes will draw on nearly ten years of case-based research by the BBRT and best practice in leading change. Each course has been tailored for a specific audience level and will detail why the traditional model must be changed, how the new model works and how to implement it.

Beyond Budgeting: devolved leadership, will be held on Wednesday 19 September and is a half day event for CEOs, CFOs, heads of business and strategy/human resources/change directors. It aims to show how changing the management model can provide a strategic advantage that enables growth and sustained superior performance, particularly in a changeable and competitive business environment. Beyond budgeting:

adaptive performance management, will be held on Thursday 20 September and is a one day course for finance managers and staff working in any industry in the public or private sectors. It aims to show how changing from a centralised to a truly decentralised management model can provide a strategic advantage that enables growth and sustained superior performance.

The primary aim of ‘Beyond budgeting’ is not to abandon budgeting. The problems that most companies experience with their budgeting processes are merely symptoms of a deeper problem with the whole command and control management model. The aim of ‘Beyond budgeting’ is to build a coherent model that supports today’s competitive success factors where every component of the model works with, not against it.

Mr Robin Fraser is a former management consulting partner with Coopers and Lybrand in the UK and advises companies on the design and implementation of management models. He has many years of experience in business planning, performance improvement, cost reduction and change management, and has worked across all sectors. In Coopers and Lybrand he led the development of Priority Base Budgeting (PBB), and headed the firm’s Activity Based Management (ABM) practice. Before joining Coopers and Lybrand he worked as an industrial engineer in British Oxygen (BOC) and Rio Tinto Zinc (RTZ).

The Beyond budgeting Mastercourses from CIMA will benefit companies by helping to build a senior management and finance team that is open minded and ready to support fundamental change in the organisations management model when the time is right.
