Orange Electric donates Rs 6 m eye equipment to Kurunegala Hospital

As part of its ‘Light for you Sight for me’ CSR programme, fully Sri Lankan family owned Electric Switch manufacturing giant Orange Electric donated a Phacoemulasifier Machine valued at Rs.6 Million to perform suture-less cataract eye surgery. “This state of the art machine which was most needed by this hospital will now help eye surgeons to conduct cataract operations without the use of traditional scalpel and sutures so we can avoid 90% of infections that may occur after such surgery, specially in areas like Kurunegala, where purified water is scarce,” said Consultant Ophthalmologist of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital Dr. Miss. Lilanthi Dharmaratne who initiated the request and received the machine from the Orange Electric Chairperson Tilaka Kodituwakku.

“This donation was possible due to the confidence our customers had in us by choosing Orange Bulbs. Today all Orange Bulb packages carry our CSR message “Light for You, Sight for Me” so that our customers also can be a part of this meritorious act,” said Orange Electric Chairperson Tilaka Kodituwakku who heads the CSR program.

Orange Electric is the undisputed leader in electrical switches and sockets in Sri Lanka.

Two years ago the company introduced a range of household bulbs, energy saving CFL’s and tube lights. Today, Orange Lighting Bulbs boasts of a 35% market share in Sri Lanka with sales of over 750,000 bulbs a month. “As a Sri Lankan company we wanted to give our people something in return, other than the lights we sell. By contributing 10cts from every GLS bulb and Rs1/= from every CFL bulb we sell, it gives the Sri Lankan Federation for the Visually Handicapped about Rs200,000/= every month,” said Abdul Zubair the Chief Operating Officer of Orange Lighting.

“It is our aim to assist the government and other NGOs to eradicate avoidable blindness so that our people will be able to see the world with Orange Lighting when the sun sets” said Ananda Rajapakse the CEO (International Operations) of Orange Electric who was associated in setting up this CSR programme for the company in consultation with Dr. Wickrema Weerasooriya, advisor to the Sri Lanka Federation of the Visually Handicapped.

During the past year, Orange Lighting has helped over 300 people to undergo cataract surgery by meeting the cost of cataract lenses and facilitating surgeries at government hospitals. This is a good example of a Sri Lankan company which proudly associates itself with such a meritorious act, as service to the blind which cuts across all barriers of people irrespective of colour, religion, race or creed.
