Golden opportunity for Lankan Chemists

University of Cincinnati Offers 4 doctoral seats with full assistantships

Since appointing Priyanthi Dissanayake as its official representative in Sri Lanka, the University of Cincinnati (UC) continues to strengthen its ties with Sri Lanka by recruiting new doctoral students to join the Department of Chemistry Ph.D. graduate programme. Vice Provost Mitch Leventhal will spearhead UC’s latest visit to the Island Nation from October 17-20 aimed at identifying top prospective applicants. The Department of Chemistry graduate programme plans to accept as many as four Sri Lankan students to enter the Ph.D. program in fall 2008 with full assistantships.

The University of Cincinnati is located in an urban setting in the central region of the United States and has a reputation for offering students a balance of educational excellence and real-world experience. Since its founding in 1819, UC has been the source of many discoveries creating positive change for society, including the first antihistamine. Each year, this urban, public, research university graduates 5,000 students, adding to more than 200,000 living alumni around the world.

The UC Department of Chemistry is known for bringing together faculty, staff and students from diverse cultures and backgrounds with the common goal of achieving excellence in teaching and scholarship.

The Department has approximately 100 full-time doctoral students who each receive a full tuition scholarship and a stipend that provides full support during their studies at UC. The chemistry programme covers all major sub-disciplines of chemistry and biochemistry with many opportunities for interdisciplinary study. The programme focuses on providing a dynamic learning and research environment that includes state-of-the-art methods and instrumentation and features a high faculty-to-student ratio with special emphasis given to preparing students for life after graduate school.

The UC faculty includes two Beckman Young Investigators and several U.S. NSF CAREER Award winners. The Department continues to grow at a rate of more than one new faculty member per year over the past 10 years, with a newly arrived faculty member in inorganic chemistry and another in Materials/Chemical Biology arriving fall 2008.
