It is no coincidence. The popular Sri Lanka-England battle is confined to cricket these days but recently Bauddhaloka Mawatha played host to a different battle recreating history to depict the historic Matale uprising of 1848 against British rule. The special event was organised to promote and reward the telecast of ‘Mahathala Hatana’ a 40-episode teledrama, which brings to life historic characters such as Weera Puran Appu, Gongalegoda Banda, and Dingi Rala, who were prominent rebels against colonial rule. Here are two scenes of the event.

Credit rating agencies issue warning

As the Government this week kicked off the marketing of its controversial US$ 500 million Bond issue in the US, two rating agencies have given their ratings whilst issuing caution.

Two rating agencies Fitch and Standard & Poor’s (S&P) gave BB- and B+ ratings respectively to the 10 year Sovereign Bond issue this week. However, their statements also contained great concerns on a range of issues such as the impact of the ethnic conflict, fiscal management and macro economic fundamentals despite commending the past resilience of the country.
