Keells Super and NAITA launch ‘Trade Certificatefor Supermarket Operations Assistants’

Jaykay Marketing Services Ltd, a John Keells Group company, together with the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), last week launched a training programme to empower young Sri Lankan men and women with supermarket operational skills and make them gainfully employable after 24 months, both locally and overseas.

The training programme is titled ‘Trade Certificate for Supermarket Operations Assistants’ and involves extensive classroom and on-the-job training in all areas of super market operations. Training sessions will be held at all Keells Supermarkets and will be conducted by an Internal Trainer who will be based at each supermarket, while all classroom training will be at the Keells Retail Academy.Jaykay Marketing Services CEO Charitha Subasinghe said that, this is the very first time a supermarket chain is conducting a NAITA approved training programme.

“After training, these young men and women can easily get into permanent employment as supervisors if they meet the minimum qualifying criteria.

The industry is growing at a rapid pace and therefore, they will no doubt have enough jobs available in the market.”NAITA Chairman Amal Senalankadhikara said that, since NAITA comes under the Ministry of Vocational and Technical Training, it makes this Trade Certificate a government backed programme. “We are very happy to team up with an organisation of the calibre of the John Keells Group to launch this trade certificate. With its finely honed and acclaimed supermarket operations in Sri Lanka for the last 17 years, the quality of training will be on par with international standards.

This will not only give our trainees employment locally, but also make them lucratively employable overseas.”Jaykay Marketing Services Head of Human Resources Nilush Cooray said, “When enrolling trainees for this programme, Jaykay Marketing Services will not only be looking at qualifications. Greater weightage will also be given to their attitude towards customer handling. Since supermarket operations largely pivot on customers and customer handling, the main other focus during the 24 month training period will be on customer service. They will also have to undergo a mandatory 100 hours of English language training, free of charge, to receive the certificate from NAITA.

The Keells Retail Academy is the training arm for Jaykay Marketing Services Ltd and operates at three levels: Basic level - for entry level positions (Cashiers, Customer Service Assistants), Intermediary Level - Supervisory positions and the Advanced Level - for management positions
