Club Palm Garden regains TT Beach VB title


In a repeat final of last year, Club Palm Garden, Beruwala regained the Travel Trade Beach Volleyball title, beating defending champions, SriLankan Airlines at the 5th Travel Trade Sports Club Championships sponsored by Ceylon Hotels Corporation in association with Ole Springs Bottlers (Pvt) Ltd., hosted by Lihiniya Surf Hotel at the Bentota’s “Golden Mile” on Saturday.


The Beach, Negombo took the “Plate”, beating Club Bentota .

Twenty-nine teams from Hotels, Travel Agents and Airlines affiliated to the TTSC took part. Initially, the tournament was conducted on a round robin basis with the teams pooled into 8 groups. At the completion of the League Stage, which consisted 39 matches the first two teams of each group qualified for the Knock-out stage.

The Beach Negombo pair B.M.S. Rasanga and Indika Dinesh Kurera beat the Club Bentota Pair, J. Kalabarachchi and H. Teril Chandraratne 21/14.
Final : The Club Palm Garden pair, K.H.S. Kalhara and D. Nihal Tillakaratne beat the SriLankan Airlines pair S.D. Karunaratne and T.L.C. de Silva 21/16.


Special awards : Indika Dinesh Kurera of The Beach, Negombo was picked as the Most Promising player and Nihal Tillakaratne of Club Palm Garden, Beruwala was adjudged as the Most Outstanding Player.
In the exhibition match played prior to the grand final, Surfing, Club Bentota pair: Dhanushka P. Amarasekera and Pathmalal Gunasekera beat the Beach Club Bentota pair: Shantha Amarasekera and Chalitha Sampath.


The added attraction was the colourful Wind Surfing competition, held during the lunch break, conducted by the Wind Surfing and Board Sailing Association of Sri Lanka with 15 participants.


Results : (1) Priyantha Gunawardena (Sun Shine Water Sport), (2) Pathum Nishantha (Laleen Wind surfing School), (3) Chathura Gunawardena (Sun Shine Water Sports), (4) Chameera Gunawardena (Sun Shine Water Sports), (5) Chaminda Kumara Silva (Sun River Water Sports) A Special Award was given to the 14- year old Chameera Gunawardena, being the youngest participant.


A word of praise should go to Roshan Adihetty, Manager, Lihiniya Surf Hotel,Bentota for the very unique set of trophies presented at the awards presentation. All trophies were entirely hand crafted out of wood. The three main trophies standing like monuments, at least 3 feet in height and weighing over 10 lbs.


These astounding trophies were given away by Anura Lokuhetti (CEO/CHC, Chief Guest), Jackson Kottahachchi (Chairman, Pradesiya Saba/ Bentota) , Prasanjit Perera (President/TTSC), B. Balakrishnan (Head of Retail Sales / Ole Springs Bottlers (Pvt) Ltd.), Refhan Razeen (Dep.
