Chandrika, Niluka continue to reign in badminton

Niluka Karunaratne and Chandrika de Silva retained the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively at the 55th Senior National Badminton Championships held at the Royal College Sports Complex on Monday.
Chandrika de Silva won the women’s singles championship for the tenth time this year. Except for the year 2004 Chandrika won this title from 1997 to 2007. In 2004 Chandrika lost to Thilini Jayasinghe who was the runner-up this time. However it is Chandrika Mallawarachchi who registered the most wins taking the title in seven consecutive years.
Niluka won his seventh consecutive championship (2001 to 2007) the highest number of wins in the men’s singles event. Earlier Niroshan Wijekoon won the championship title for six years.


The Sri Lanka Badminton Association did a good job in successfully organising and conducting this tournament. B.A.C Fernando General Manager of Bank of Ceylon was the Chief Guest and gave away the awards.


Results finals:

Women’s singles: Chandrika de Silva beat Thilini Jayasinghe 18-21, 21-18, 21-18.


Men’s singles: Niluka Karunaratne beat Diluka Karunaratne 21-17, 21-8.
Men’s doubles: Niluka Karunaratne/ Eranga Fernando beat Duminda Jayakody/ Chameera Kumarapperuma 17-21, 21-9, 21-12.


Women’s doubles: Chandrika de Silva / Thilini Jayasinghe beat Upuli Samanthika / Achini Ratnasiri 25-23, 21-13.


Mixed doubles: Hasitha Chanaka / Thilini Jayasinghe beat Niluka Karunaratne/ Lekha Shehani 21-18, 21-17.


Men’s over 40 singles: Niroshan Wijekoon beat Kamal Gamlath 21-5, 21-11.


Men’s over 40 doubles: Dharshana Senaratne / Kamal Gamlath beat Niroshan Wijekoon/ Amanda Weerasinghe 21-10, 21-23, 23-21.
Master’s over 50 singles: L.G Amarathunga beat W.M Ariyasena 21-10, 21-18;


Master’s over 50 doubles: Thilak Amarathunga/ Ruwan Chandratilleka beat P.K Britto/ L.G Amarathunga 21-18, 21-15.
