Niluka Karunaratne and Chandrika de Silva retained the mens
and womens singles titles respectively at the 55th Senior
National Badminton Championships held at the Royal College Sports
Complex on Monday.
Chandrika de Silva won the womens singles championship for
the tenth time this year. Except for the year 2004 Chandrika won
this title from 1997 to 2007. In 2004 Chandrika lost to Thilini
Jayasinghe who was the runner-up this time. However it is Chandrika
Mallawarachchi who registered the most wins taking the title in
seven consecutive years.
Niluka won his seventh consecutive championship (2001 to 2007) the
highest number of wins in the mens singles event. Earlier
Niroshan Wijekoon won the championship title for six years.
