Sabaragamuwa students win battle

By Jayashika Padmasiri
Following hours of negotiations, the government yesterday agreed to relocate the Sabaragamuwa faculty of Applied Sciences from Buttala to Belihuloya.

Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) convener Duminda Nagamuwa told The Bottom Line that Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle had settled the matter in parliament by deciding to shift the Faculty of Sciences from Buttala to Belihuloya by March 15 next year.

Negotiations, initiated at around 1.00 p.m. in parliament, went on till evening with Ministers Fernandopulle, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Sumedha G. Jayasena and Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa negotiating with Nagamuwa. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. Gamini Samaranayaka and Vice Chancellor Prof. R. Mahaliyanarachchi were also present during the negotiations.

“If the government fails to keep its promise, then we will return to protests,” he warned.
