JHU charges JVP in helping minority parties

By Jayashika Padmasiri
The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday charged that the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) was helping minority parties to achieve their racist demands in their dealings with the government.

JHU spokesman Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe told The Bottom Line that as the JVP is not supporting the government and the budget, the party is letting the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) make demands from the government to support the budget.

“The JVP is letting CWC Leader Arumugam Thondaman and SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem to pressure the government with their racial demands,” he charged.

Warnasinghe also accused the JVP of supporting and helping the United National Party (UNP) with its anti government programme saying such actions will only benefit the UNP.

“This will only strengthen the power of the minority parties and give them a strong hand when it comes to decisions. The government is pressurised to listen to their racial conditions today. All of this will finally help the UNP,” Warnasinghe charged.

According to him, all these protest campaigns, led by student unions, free media movement and human rights organisations, claiming human rights, are abused in the country at this crucial time. He pointed out that these campaigns would assist the UNP and the LTTE and not the government which is fighting against terrorism.
