Mahinda’s visit makes headlines for all the wrong reasons

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit to Japan is reported to have made headlines there, apparently for all the wrong reasons, The Bottom Line learns.

Reports reaching this newspaper claimed that the President’s visit has made front page news in leading newspapers and also suburban newspapers in Japan owing to his large delegation, which included an official and unofficial delegation.

Many Japanese language newspapers had stated that the President’s extraordinary number was one of a kind and something unique, which Japan had not witnessed often even when more powerful leaders had visited that country in the past.

Several Japanese newspapers had also claimed that some members of President Rajapaksa’s delegation had failed to get rooms in leading hotels because they had not made bookings prior to their departure from Colombo. The Japanese Government is reportedly sponsoring only around 10 members of the official delegation. Sources told The Bottom Line the state is apparently bearing the cost for the balance delegation, apart from the business delegation, which comprised at least 40 members.
