President wants efforts ‘redoubled’ to crush terrorism in Sri Lanka

By Lakna Paranamanna
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday called upon all those who stand for freedom and democracy to unite, shedding petty political differences, to defeat terrorism in Sri Lanka.

The call was made in the aftermath of the claymore bomb blast which took the life of Non-cabinet Minister D.M. Dassanayaka.

“This sad event is a further reminder of the need to redouble our efforts to rid our country of terrorism and the use of violence to achieve political ends. It also draws attention to the constant threats faced by all those who stand for the democratic way of life, from the forces of terror that have been strengthened for too long, through the politics of appeasement,” the President said in a statement.

He also said that it was no accident that the Minister who was targeted in this cowardly attack was spearheading the work of rehabilitation and reconstruction in the Eastern Province, since its liberation from the clutches of the LTTE by the Armed Forces of our country.

“As State Minister for Nation Building, he made it his mission to restore normalcy to the lives of all of our people in the Eastern Province, irrespective of ethnicity or religion, who had been living under the oppressive yoke of the terrorist LTTE for nearly two decades. His assassination shows that such work on behalf of the people invites the hatred of the forces of violence and terror, and gives lie to the LTTE’s claim that it is the liberator of the Tamil people of Sri Lanka,” the President said.

Meanwhile the Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake said he deeply regretted the assassination of Minister Dassanayake, while condemning what he termed as, ‘uncivilized behaviour of the LTTE.’

“The sole motive of the terrorists is to destroy the valuable lives in the country. Just at the beginning of the year, the blood thirsty terrorists commenced their killing spree with a murder. They are not concerned whether their prey is a group of children; a Parliamentarian; a group of disabled soldiers who are on their way for medication. All that they want is to destroy the lives of these people,” the Prime Minister said.

The Government Information Department said in a statement, that the government joins all democratic forces in the country in denouncing this vile act of terrorism perpetrated by an enemy that is clearly desperate.

“The government condemns in no uncertain terms this despicable act, and emphasises its commitment to wipe out terrorism in all its form from this country, for terrorism is the greatest threat to the security of the citizenry and it is the primary duty of the government to ensure the security of all,” the statement said
