Vociferous MPs in Govt. hit list - UNP

By Rathindra Kuruwita
The United National Party yesterday charged that the government has decided to ‘silence’ several of its most vocal parliamentarians.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe told Parliament on Tuesday that these MPs are forced to choose between compliance and death.

“We have learned that Lakshman Senevirathne and Johnston Fernando are in a government hit list. Several prominent figures in the government have decided to ‘silence’ their voices of dissent,” Wickramasinghe said. He added that the security of parliamentarians should be assured if parliamentary sessions are to be continued in the future.

“If these MPs will be assassinated for speaking against the government, what is the use of a parliament? What is Parliament, if the peoples’ representatives cannot express themselves freely?” the Opposition Leader demanded.

Meanwhile, UNP MP Johnston Fernando claimed that the government is trying to use security as political leverage. He added that by reducing the number of security personnel provided for the opposition MPs, the government is implying that they are in danger, if they speak up against the injustices.

“Our security is reduced. Who will take responsibility if we are killed? We have two options available, stand against the government and die, or comply. How can this Parliament function, if this is the case,” he asked.
