Govt. attacks prevent schooling in N&E

The LTTE Peace Secretariat yesterday charged that the security forces have been instrumental in depriving at least 43,000 children from attending school in the Northern and Eastern provinces, over the last 18 months.

The LTTE Peace Secretariat, in its website, said that a total of 217 schools in the two provinces, were either closed, damaged or came under High Security Zones (HSZ), thus depriving 43, 854 children of attending school.

“A total of 4,110 children were deprived of attending schools as their schools were declared within HSZs, while another 18, 959 children have been deprived of going to school as some 73 schools were damaged owing to attacks launched by security personnel, another 126 schools were closed for numerous reasons depriving 20,785 children of attending school in the Northern and Eastern provinces,” the LTTE said.

“During the three decades of attacks on Tamil civilian institutions, schools have borne the brunt. The number of schools destroyed and displaced by such attacks over the three decades would be close to 1000,” the LTTE said.
