UNP wearing ‘Black’ denounce Govt in House

By Rathindra Kuruwita
The United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarians wearing black Satakas protested in Parliament yesterday, condemning the assassination of MP T. Maheswaran. The MPs carried banners and placards that read “The voice of Maheswaran cannot be silenced” and “Is security provided only for government ministers?”

“The government is responsible for this death, because they gave an opening to the assassins by reducing his security. Maheswaran spoke of the legitimate grievances of the Tamil people and look what happened to him,” said UNP MP Lakshman Senevirathne, after the protest. He accused the IGP of not taking any action to protect Maheswaran, although he was aware of the precarious situation the MP was in.

Lakshman Senevirathne said that Maheswaran told Parliament that a government MP had threatened him and declared that he was placing his life in the hands of the Speaker.

“I know the Speaker informed the IGP who did not take any action. But the same IGP has placed four security personnel at Maheswaran’s house now. We would like to ask what for?” MP Lakshman Senevirathne said.

The UNP MP added that the government is trying to wash its hands off by claiming that the LTTE is responsible for everything that happens in the country. But the falsity of these statements are demonstrated when various officials make contradictory statements he said.

“The IGP said that it was the LTTE who killed Maheswaran but Defense Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella told the BBC that it was an ex bodyguard of Mr. Maheswaran. Who are we to believe?” he asked. “When D.M. Dassanayake’s vehicle was caught in a claymore blast Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said that the Minister had only sustained “minor injuries” but two hours later, we learnt that he died. How can we believe anything the government says about national security?”
