Pullout of Emirates from managing SriLankan Airlines

Sri Lanka Tourism assures no cause for alarm

Sri Lanka Tourism (SLT) yesterday attempted to quell growing apprehension following the announcement from Dubai based Emirates that it will not be renewing the much hyped contract when it expires on March 31, 2008.

SLT, in a statement yesterday, said that, “There is no cause for alarm for stakeholders of SLT, as it is expected that normal operations will continue and we expect the transfer of management from the Emirates to the major shareholder, to be smooth, with minimum impact on tourism operations. We also expect the focus on the destination to be even more now and request all our partners to be confident and work in tandem with the Airline, to assist in a smooth management transition process,” the statement said.

According to the statement, there is a high degree of competence at various levels of the management of SriLankan Airlines that Emirates has helped develop under its management.

“We also look forward to seeing a filling up of any gaps that may exist as a result of the expiry of the agreement and believe that it will be to meet the needs of ensuring that key competencies are all intact. Emirates has also announced that it will hold its shareholder interest in SriLankan Airlines beyond the expiry of the period of the Management Agreement and it is indicative of the confidence Emirates has on the potential and the future of SriLankan Airlines which has won many accolades in the recent past,” the statement added.
