Trade Unions unite

Strength in unity as Trade Unions join forces to fight for their collective rights

By Aisha Edris
In an attempt to fight for their rights, some 40 trade unions are, officially, set to come under one wing tomorrow, when they launch the ‘Trade Union Confederation’.

The President of the Trade Union Confederation, K.S. Weerasekara said that the confederation’s main aim is to safeguard workers’ rights, as they had been violated by different parties in the past and these workers did not have a strong voice to fight for their cause.

“In this country, there are many trade unions, but most of them are politically affiliated which do no go against their party’s policies, even if they are wrong. What we are trying to do is join hands with independent trade unions, to voice the plight faced by workers,” Weerasekara told The Bottom Line.

The confederation includes the Health Sector Alliance, Free Trade Zone Trade Union, Railway Service Trade Union Alliance, All Ceylon Union of Teachers, Union of Postal and Telecommunication Officers and the Principals Union.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Trade Union Confederation, Navaratne Bandara said that the confederation would identify the year 2008 as the year of struggle for workers, as the present President Mahinda Rajapaksa led government has failed to deliver any of the promises it pledged.

“We have been tolerant for over a year now, and now our workers are losing their patience, so, will launch islandwide action if our demands continue to fall on deaf ears,” Bandara warned.
