UK, India want something ‘credible’ from Sri Lanka

The United Kingdom and India yesterday urged the Sri Lankan Government to put forward a ‘credible’ package which will be acceptable by all communities.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, Gordon Browne, Prime Minister of United Kingdom and India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reiterated that there is no military solution to the Sri Lankan conflict.

“They agreed that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sri Lanka, and urged the Sri Lankan Government to put forward a credible devolution package as a key contribution to finding a political settlement acceptable to all communities within the framework of a united Sri Lanka,” the joint statement signed by the two premiers said. The statement was issued following the India-UK annual Summit which was held in Delhi on January 21, 2008.

The delegation from the United Kingdom was led by Brown while the Indian delegation was led by Singh.
