Sri Lanka lauds Japanese grant to uplift art and culture

By Kushali Atukorale
The Government of Sri Lanka yesterday received US$ 30,906 from Japan for the development of the country’s traditional art and culture sector.

The funds will be utilised to uplift the John de Silva Memorial Theatre.

Speaking at the Signing Ceremony for the provision of the follow up grant, Japanese Ambassador Kiyoshi Araki said that he was grateful to the Government of Japan for approving the grant for cultural development in Sri Lanka

‘I hope the lighting system will benefit artists and producers and also encourage the development of traditional art and culture in Sri Lanka,” Araki said.

Director Department of Cultural Affairs E.M.Abhayaratne said that he was thankful to the Japanese Government for granting this valuable favour for poor artists who use the theatre.

“A lighting system is something very essential as most of the poor artistes utilise this theatre for dramas. Therefore what is the point in giving out the John de Silva Memorial Theatre with a default set of lighting” Abhayaratne queried?

He pointed out the grant was another step towards the strengthening the mutual understanding and the friendship between the two countries. “Japan has always taken the lead in developing our country with special consideration on Education, culture and health,” Abhayaratne added.
