Karunaratne brothers excel in Uganda


Diluka Karunaratne and Dinuka Karunaratne making their inaugural appearance in the Ugandan International Badminton Championships at Kampala emerged men’s double champions.

According to a senior official of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA), the three Karunaratne brothers excelled in this tournament to bring honour to Sri Lanka.

Elder brother Niluka who is the top ranked shuttler in Sri Lanka also reached the singles final. He put up a good fight against Lutania number one player Kosketic who is ranked 55 in the world before losing. Niluka finished runner-up but he managed to beat two top ranked players coming to the final.

The three brothers will join the 12-member Sri Lanka team for the Iran International Badminton Championships which is scheduled to be held from February 2 to 5 in Teheran, Iran. The Sri Lanka team comprises Thilini Jayasinghe, Chandrika de Silva, Upuli Samanthika, Achini Ratnasiri, Chamika Madurawa, Niluka Karunaratne, Diluka Karunaratne, Dinuka Karunaratne, R.S Dahanayake, Kasun Jayawardena, Hasitha Chanaka, Anushaka Lakshan, Palitha Hettiarachchi (manager cum coach).
