Ranil
says only UNP can curb corruption
By Kushali Atukorale
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe vowed that only a United
National Party (UNP) government could end corruption and lessen
the cost of living.
Addressing a Jana Bala Sena Programme yesterday, he said that Rajapaksa
government has ruined the country and therefore, it is the UNP that
could bring the corruption and skyrocketing cost of living under
control.
In year 2002, the UNP government was able to strengthen the
value of the rupee and was able to control the prices of essential
goods, Wickremesinghe said.
He also said that the Rajapaksa government has taken initiatives
to celebrate the New Year already, and added that it was not possible
for ordinary civilians to do the same thing, as the prices were
escalating faster than ever before.
Therefore, we have started to campaign from the grassroots
level and educate the people of the truth about the present government.
This government has only boasted that it is the only administration
that could usher in peace and prosperity, Wickremesinghe pointed
out.
He further said that the UNP will not give up the fight till the
present UPFA government was toppled.
UNP Parliamentarian and Chairman Rukman Senanayake speaking at the
event questioned the point of having a government when the government
could not control the rising cost of living.
We have started to campaign and agitate the people in all
levels of society against the corrupt government that is just enjoying
the privileges, he said.He also said that the government has
pushed the economy and the future of the country into a great pit.
He further pointed out that it is Wickremesinghe who could uplift
the country, which he said has fallen into a trap.
Partys National Organiser S.B. Dissanayake said that it is
high time to stand strong as one and fight against the government.
What good has the government done? The cost of living has
reached unimaginable heights. The government is showing a false
picture to the people and therefore, the UNP is organising a protest
in every district on April 3, he said.
