Maharagama Sports Day on April 6


Maharagama Sports Club is making elaborate arrangements to hold a Sports Day on a grand scale on April 6. The venue is the ‘Haritha Udyana’, the new playground [near the ‘2000 Plaza’ Apartments] on the Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital Road.

UN Trade Centre of Nawinna has volunteered to sponsor a major part of these celebrations, which are organised with the broad view of promoting all sports in the area and also enhancing the social and cultural outlook of the community. One of the important programmes of the day will be felicitating of unsung heroes of the region, i.e. leading sports personalities hailing from the area, who have brought honour to the country by reaching international standards in various fields of sports, such as Nuwan Soysa (cricket), Lasantha Perera (volleyball), Kamal Palitha (cycling), Lakshman de Alwis and Ramani Mangalika (athletics), Gayan Samaraweera (basketball) and Deepthi Rupasingbe (netball).

Other items include a vehicle parade, a 15 over cricket tournament, a cricket match between Maharagama Traders Association and the Pamunuwa Traders Association. An exhibition volleyball match between the Sri Lanka Air Force team and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority team, who are in the forefront of the volleyball arena, and an open carrom tournament will also be held.

Sri Lanka’s carrom wizards including Chamil Cooray who won the world Championship recently will also grace the occasion.

Various games and sports activities designed for the children, including a day-long “Kiddies Corner” will keep the children occupied, while a musical band and other forms of leisure activities will be available for the benefit, of families.

Minister of Sports, Gamini Lokuge, Minister of Urban Development, Dinesh Gunawardene, who was instrumental in establishing the Haritha Udyana, Chairperson, Mrs. Kanthi Kodikara and Sports Minister of the Western Province, Gamini Thilakasiri, have been invited to grace the occasion and distribute prizes. Karunaratne Sigera, President of the Madiwela Prajamandalaya has played a commendable role to make this event a success by permitting the use of the ground.
