Plans to kill TNA website?

Moves are afoot to block the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) website, on grounds that the site directly contributes to separation of the country.

The website, www.tamilalliance.net openly promotes the Tamil Eelam concept and states that, “Geographically, the island of Sri Lanka appears as one land but historically there have been two nations in it. North and the East of the island of Sri Lanka is the traditional homeland of Tamils. Archaeological evidence demonstrates the undeniable fact that Tamils have been living and ruling themselves in this part of the island of Sri Lanka since ancient times.

In this distinct Tamil land in this island, Tamils have a separate history, language, economy and cultural values. The Tamil homeland was ruled by Tamil kings till the interventions of the Europeans. Many European historians and map makers have recorded the distinctiveness of the two nations in the two distinct areas of this island.”

The website also depicts a map of the Tamil Homeland.

Highly placed political sources said that a minister had brought the contents of the website to the attention of government members during a recent meeting and had requested that steps be taken to block the TNA website. The attempt to block the TNA website comes many months after the pro-LTTE website, Tamilnet was blocked last year.

Last year, a newly launched website of a registered Tamil political party was also hacked into and all information related to the human rights situation within the country was ‘deleted’ by a group believed to be having unrestricted access to all websites and other internet related activities in the country.

The Akhila Ilankai Tamil United Front (AITUF) launched their website www.tamilunitedfront.org on July 1, 2007. However, just days after the launch, a hacker had deleted all details with regard to the human rights situation within the country.

The ‘intruder’ had also changed the password, preventing the lawful owners from accessing the site.
