Are the numbers cooked up?

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is also the Finance Minister, apparently inquiring about statistics in the Central Bank’s 2007 Annual Report, launched yesterday, from Governor Nivard Cabraal while Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera (left) looks on. The duo has been singled out by the Opposition for the weak state of the economy and highest ever cost of living in the country’s history through poor policies. However, the annual report reveals a more positive picture of the economy including sound macro economic and monetary policies pursued by the Treasury and Central Bank. Pic by Nissanka Wijeratne.
