NPCA to crack human trafficking racket

By Ayesha Wijeratne
National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) suspects that a massive racket of human trafficking can be exposed through three Sri Lankan children who were arrested in Singapore and handed over to the NCPA via the authorities in the Sri Lankan Embassy in Singapore.

NCPA Chief OIC IP Wijesena Withana told The Bottom Line that according to the information revealed through investigations up to date, the particular incident allegedly shows that a child trafficking racket has been in operation for a long time.

He said that the three Tamil children, a girl of 10 years, two boys of 11 and 15 years were arrested at Singapore Air Port recently while they were attempting to present their passports.

“The three victims have been accompanied to Singapore by a suspected person, whose identity is not known yet, allegedly to be sent to England for some illegal activity. First they have gone to Malaysia to get their passports and then gone to Singapore, with the expectation of leaving to England from there. We have recorded statements from them with the help of a translator,” IP Wijesena added.

NCPA is conducting further investigations in connection with the incident to uncover the culprits engaged in this human trafficking racket.
