4th Asian Women’s Cricket Championship

Eshan, Chamari star in win over Pakistan

Sri Lanka Women player Chamari Polgampola (right) celebrates one of her four wickets with a teammate against Pakistan at Kurunegala yesterday.

A splendid all-round performance from 23-year-old Eshan Kaushalya enabled Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 45 runs in a second round match of the 4th Asian Women’s Cricket Championship played at the Welagedera Stadium, Kurunegala yesterday.

Put into bat first Sri Lanka Women were reduced to 118-6 before Kaushalya came on the scene to make a top score of 44 off 55 balls (5 fours) and help her team eventually reach a fighting total of 194-9 off 50 overs. The damage to the Sri Lankan batting was done by Pakistan Women’s skipper who spun her leg-breaks viciously to capture four wickets for 31.

Chasing a target of 195, Pakistan began badly losing two wickets for 12 runs before a 74-run stand between Sajjida Shah and Mumtaz put them on track. Mumtaz scored a patient 57 off 106 balls (6 fours) and Shah made 27 off 63 balls, but the rest of the batting was swept under the carpet by the medium pace of Chamari Polgampola and Kaushalya’s leg-spin. Kaushalya picked up the key wickets of Mumtaz and Sana Javed and came back later to wrap up the innings by taking the last wicket to end with figures of 3 for 25. Polgampola took 4 for 26.

Scores: Sri Lanka Women 194-9 (50) (Shashikala Siriwardene 34, Eshan Kaushalya 44, Extras 28, Sajjida Shah 2/29, Urooj Mumtaz 4/31)

Pakistan Women 149 (45) (Sajjida Shah 27, Urooj Mumtaz 57, Sana Javed 19, Chamari Polgampola 4/26, Eshan Kaushalya 3/25).

India continue unbeaten form

Teenager Salma Khatun hit a career best 90 off 140 balls (20 fours), but Bangladesh Women still finished on the losing side in their Women’s Asia Cup match against India played at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium yesterday.

Khatun, the 17-year-old Bangladesh captain held her team’s innings together as they managed only 160 in 50 overs.

India were in a bit of a bother losing half the side for 108 by the 31st over, three of them through run outs before wicket-keeper Karu Jain (33 n.o.) and acting captain Jhulan Goswami (23 n.o.) came together in a match-winning stand of 54 off 58 balls to carry their team to a five-wicket win.

Scores: Bangladesh Women 160 (50) (Panna Ghosh 24, Salma Khatun 90, Tirush Kamani 2/14, Rumeli Dhar 2/31, Priyanka Roy 2/18)

India Women 161-5 (41) (Rumeli Dhar 31, Karu Jain 33 n.o., Jhulan Goswami 23 n.o.)
