Buddhist priests file Fundamental Rights case

Ven. Ellawala Medananda Thero, Ven. Nannanpurawe Buddha Rakkitha Thero, Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sopitha, Thero, Ven Kirindawela Somarama Thero and four others filed a Fundamental Right case before Supreme Court against distributing of lands belonging to Deegavapiya Chaithya.

According to the petition, filed by Attorney-at-Law, G. W. C. Bandara Thalagune, the late M. H. M. Ashraff, a former minister, distributed lands in Deegavapiya to Muslims, Sinhalese and Tamils, on three instances.

The petitioners in their petition have cited Minister of Housing and Development Farial Ashraff, Minister of Agriculture and Lands and Land Development Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga, Chairman of Hingurana Sugar Cooperation M. M. Ifthikar and nine others as respondents.

Petitioner further states that former Minister M. H. M. Ashraff had forcibly created a Muslim colony named Ashraff Naggar.

The petitioners state that the objective of Mr. Ashraff was to limit Deegavapiya to mere 585 Acres. One of the Parivara Chaittyas was bulldozed in 1996 which attracted much public outcry.
