Education Ministry felicitates Lankan student team for Intel global competition


The Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha today congratulated winners of the annual Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) – Yasith K. Lokuge of Ananda College, Praveej M.. Jayasinghe of St. Anthony’s College and Sajeewa D. Hendurugoda of Nugawela Central College – just prior to their departure to the world’s largest pre-college science competition. The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) will be held this month in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and will see participation from the three young stars from Sri Lanka.

The Minister handed over air tickets and monetary gifts to the winners on behalf of Intel.  In addition, student winner Yasith Lokuge received the “Herbert Hoover Young Engineer Award” medal and certificate which is an annual regional award for offered by Intel ISEF.

Also travelling to the Intel ISEF will be Anura Dissanayake, Director, Secondary Education Modernisation Project (SEMP) of Ministry of Education, Professor M. T. M. Jiffry, Chairperson, Advisor Committee of National Science Foundation (NSF), Engineer J. Meegoda, Chairperson. Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) Competition of Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) and Engineer Sarath Samarasiri, Director, Design Centre of University of Moratuwa. The team will be attending the Intel Educator Academy 2008 in conjunction with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which brings together a select group of educators and government officials from Intel sites around the world to explore proven, innovative methods of engaging students in the study of science and math. During the five-day Intel ISEF Educator Academy, outstanding educators present workshops on student research, project-based learning and other proven ways to engage students in the study of science and mathematics. Also, experienced science fair organisers share resources and provide participants with valuable information about managing, organising, and preparing students for science fairs.

The Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) is organised by the Ministry of Education (MoE) of Sri Lanka, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) along with Intel® Education. Competitors are selected from the Science Research Project competition held by the National Science Foundation (NSF) of Sri Lanka and the Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) competition held by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL). The ten best projects from both of the competitions are pitted against each other at the SLSEF.
