EDB launches training for giftware producers, exporters


A Training Programme for Basketry was inaugurated on Tuesday (1st) at the EDB Auditorium.

The programme is organised by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board and the Western Province Industrial Development Authority.

Ms. Heide Cardenio, Technical Expert from Strategies Product Development Consultancy, Philippines, has been assigned to conduct the training programme in craftsmanship for basket making using our raw materials.

Addressing the gathering at the opening of the workshop, the Director General of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, Mrs. Sujatha Weerakoon explained that the role of the EDB is to facilitate local craftsmen to find new technology and to produce our products acceptable to the international market. She also requested the participants to disseminate the knowledge gained by attending the sessions to others in the trade.

Some of the participants said that they wanted to learn how to create new designs, study the effective usage of raw material and know how of modern production techniques.

The National Craft and Design Centre facilitates the workshop to conduct sessions at the Janakala Kendraya, Battaramulla, from July 5th, 2008 to 21st July 21, 2008 and by providing tools and raw material required for the participants. Over 100 participants including producer exporters of giftware, undergraduates from the Aesthetic Studies Unit of the Kelaniya University and Trainers of craftsmen are taking part in the sessions.

Ms. Heide Cardenio, Technical expert from the Philippines, has around 20 years of experience in training the trainers in basketry in various capitals in the Asian region.
