Govt. challenged to bring goons to justice

The main Opposition UNP yesterday in Parliament accused the Defense Ministry claiming it was responsible for the attacks on journalists who criticised military activities, as well as their abductions “Namal Perera and Mahendra Amaraweera were assaulted in a high security area. Who has the capability of pulling off such a stunt and getting away with it?” UNP MP Ranga Bandara asked.

He challenged the Government to bring these assailants to justice.

“When Nishantha Gajanayake was arrested, the tide of abductions subsided. But we later learned that Gajanayake was granted bail by a top military official,” Ranga Bandara said. “If the military officials were not directly involved why did this happen”? Bandara questioned.

Meanwhile the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Police spokesman came under heavy fire by the opposition parties. JVP MP Bimal Rathnayake criticised the Police spokesman’s charge that journalists fabricate and stage manage incidents to get asylum in foreign countries.

“Do the soldiers fighting the war sacrifice their lives so that the families get compensated? Did the monks fracture their skulls in front of Temple Trees so that they could achieve Nirvana?” Rathnayake asked. “No one in their right mind would say that these journalists would inflict injuries upon themselves to go abroad,’ he added.
