Await:
A striking nation
The
countdown has begun to tomorrows General Strike (GS),
with Trade Unions (TU) and the Opposition charging that the
Government was pulling out all stops to prevent the TU action
from going ahead.
While the impact of the strike is impossible to assess, until
the action is launched, union members warned of snags in the
distribution of fuel and blackouts, as representatives of
the key Energy sector join in tomorrows strike.
The GS has paved the way for a completely united Opposition
on this issue, with the JVP, UNP and TNA fully supportive
of tomorrows TU action.
TU representatives from key Government sectors are gearing
up for the long awaited July 10 Strike calling for a wage
increase of Rs. 5,000 to meet the burdens of hyper inflation
and skyrocketing living costs.

A
new hero is born

Ajantha
Mendis, the hero of the moment, weaved his magic against
the hapless Indian batsmen in the Asia Cup final at Karachi
on Sunday, luring half-a-dozen of them, to make the contest
a totally one-sided affair, as Sri Lanka won with ease
by 100 runs, to retain the trophy they won in 2004.
Mendiss dominance of the tournament was such that,
he ended up as its leading wicket-taker, snaring 17 scalps.
He not only won the Man of the Final, he was also picked
as Man of the Tournament. His magnificent performance
did not go unrewarded as President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday
gave him a double promotion from the rank of Corporal
in the Sri Lanka Army to Second Lieutenant. The Asia Cup
winners will arrive today at 9:30 a.m. |
