TMVP to propose devolution plan

Karuna Amman led Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP), is to submit a power devolution proposal to the All Party Representatives’ Committee (APRC), aimed at resolving the island’s long drawn out NE conflict, amidst Parliamentary opposition groups charging that, they were being sidelined in the APRC process.

Minister of Science and Technology and Chairman, APRC, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, told reporters that, the TMVP would submit the proposal soon to the APRC. “In addition to its proposal already submitted, the TMVP is to submit a further proposal based on Devolution of Power,” Xinhua quoted Vitharana as saying.

Vitharana said that, the APRC met on Monday after a long layoff, waiting for the nomination of TMVP representatives to resume sittings. Full story

Presidential presentation for Business Today Top 10
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday at the Temple Trees presented awards to the recipients of Business Today magazine’s popular Top 10 Competition. The respective award recipients were Dialog Telekom CEO Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Sri Lanka Telecom Chairperson Ms. Leisha De Silva, Distilleries Company Chairman Harry Jayewardene, JKH Director Sumithra Gunasekara, Aitken Spence Chairman Harry Jayawardena, HNB CEO Rajendra Thiagarajah, Commercial Bank Chief Operating Officer Ravi Dias, NDB Bank CEO Eran Wickremeratne, Ceylon Tobacco CEO Nustanfer Ali Khan, and Bukit Darah Chairman Tilak De Soysa. Supreme Court supports and corrects Monetary Board

Upholds Monetary Board direction on Corporate Governance for Banks; Orders amendments to transitional provisions

Delivering the order in three connected fundamental rights petitions, on 8 July 2008, the Supreme Court presided by Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, P.C., and comprising Justice Nimal Gamini Amaratunga and Justice K. Sripavan, has affirmed the Direction on Corporate Governance for licensed banks issued by the Monetary Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka on 26 December 2007, and upheld the principles that there should be limits on the age, length of service, and number of directorships that could be held by directors of licensed banks subject to certain exemptions.
