Captains
focus on the importance of Test cricket
Indias
inaugural media conference at the Taj Samudra yesterday
on their tour of Sri Lanka for a series of three Tests
and five one-day internationals centered around the
importance of Test cricket to which the opinions of
the two Test captains Mahela Jayawardene and Anil Kumble
and one past captain Arjuna Ranatunga were sought.
With the IPL looming in the background posing a threat
to Test cricket it was somewhat the appropriate time
at the start of a three-Test series between Sri Lanka
and India to pose the question.
Sri
Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said: As cricketers
the ultimate challenge for most us is Test cricket where
we will be tested the most. Twenty20 cricket is a different
challenge, so is one-day cricket. Test cricket is where
the cricketers are really tested.
Indian
Test captain Anil Kumble said: Test cricket is
here to stay and players really feel privileged to be
a part of Test cricket. Personally I remember most of
my milestones achieved in Test matches. Its very
hard for me to go back and pull out my best one-day
performances. As a cricketer we value Test cricket than
any other form. This series obviously will depend on
how the media portrays it.
