40 m worth solar panel project for Moneragala district
As
we all are aware energy saving has become a burning issue
for Sri Lanka due to the Energy Crisis faced by the whole
world today. Solar power is one of the best solution to this
challenge faced by developing countries such as Sri Lanka.
As one giant step of overcoming this problem PROJECT SOLEN
10000 was initiated in the district of Moneragala.
Under this project 400 homes and 60 schools in the Moneragala
district is to be benefited. Moneragala district is considered
as one of the less developed areas and also which has a very
low percentage of electricity penetration. The three divisions
namely, Moneragala, Madulla and Siyambalanduwa have been selected
at the first phase of this project. According to a survey
done before the implementation of this project it was revealed
that 65% was the area does not have electricity.
This project is funded by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Greece
Hellenic Aid and implemented by the Greek Non Profitable
Organization ANCE (Athens Network of Collaborating Experts)
in cooperation with the local Youth Organization SWYAA of
Sri Lanka and with the approval of the Sri Lankan Ministry
of Women Empowerment and Child Development.
As this project is implemented under the leadership of the
Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Development the project
is more focused for the school children of Moneragala district.
Therefore during the selection of beneficiaries priority was
given to the families, which have more children who are still
schooling. The sixty schools were selected under the recommendation
of the Zonal Education Directors of each division.
The electricity, produced by the panels, will be mainly used
by the beneficiaries for lighting and for listening to the
radio and watching the Television. The electric lamps that
will replace coil oil lamps will allow the school children
of the family to do their homework and housewives to do their
housework easily even after the sundown without any risks
to their health and safety while saving money and respecting
the environment.
This project has been recognised as a very vital Project by
the Government and has encouraged continuing this kind of
project with in the other districts as well. The total value
for this project is more than forty million Rupees. The Project
will be completed in another two months time. The Minister
