Court orders more security for Janaka Perera

By Stanley Samarasinghe
The Supreme Court yesterday moved to order IGP Jayantha Wickramaratna to provide at least eight police officers from Ministry Security Division (MSD) to UNP Chief Ministerial candidate for the North Central Provincial Council, Major General Janaka Perera.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, Justice Gamini Nimal Amaratunga and P. R. Ratnayake made this order after considering a Fundamental Rights Application by Maj. General Perera whose has been repeatedly refused security by the Government.

According to the order issued by the court, the Major General will be able to choose six of the eight officers assigned to his security, while the IGP will decide on the other six officers, and the weapons that they should use for Perera’s security.

Maj. General Perera filed his FR Application stating that he had served the Army for 36 years, and he had caused massive damage to the LTTE, after having participated in numerous operations against LTTE. He said that as a result of his military career, he is under direct threat from the LTTE.

Maj. General Perera further stated to court that his UPFA counterpart in the race for the North Central Provincial Council, Berty Premalal Dissanayake, who is not under any LTTE threat, was provided with 30 army personnel and 28 policemen for his security while campaigning.

Ronald Perera with Chandimal Mendis instructed by Samararatna Associates appeared for Major General Janaka Perera.
