Security Update

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) fighter jets yesterday continued its air strikes against LTTE positions in the Wanni, according to the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS).

At around 3:30 p.m. yesterday, SLAF aircraft attacked an alleged LTTE position nine kms north of Chinnakkonamalai, to support ground troops engaged in confrontations with LTTE cadres.

Meanwhile, 13 LTTE cadres were killed and several more injured in separate confrontations with government troops in the WeliOya and Wanni regions on Monday and Tuesday.

Three soldiers were killed and five wounded during the confrontations, the MCNS said.

TamilNet said twenty-one Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed in the early hours of Sunday at Ki’laali in the northern front, when LTTE Deep Penetration Units that entered the SLA-controlled territory launched an attack on SLA troopers, according to well-placed Sri Lankan military sources.

The SLA sources said that 14 dead bodies were transferred to Palaly base and that two female commandos of the LTTE Penetration Unit were killed in the clash.
The LTTE is yet to issue information on the clash.
