Special
arrangements for cultivation in Jaffna HSZ
Government has made arrangements for farmers who own paddy
lands in the Ariyalai East High Security Zone (HSZ) to commence
cultivation. Earlier, access was restricted in the area due
to security concerns.
Security forces confirmed that, the present security situation
is satisfactory and farmers can be allowed to engage in cultivation.
According to the Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna (SFHQJ),
farmers have been allowed to cultivate 103 acres of land between
the Ariyalai railway track and Jaffna-Kandy Road (A-9) from
August 17, the Ministry of Defence announced.
Farmers, after obtaining special identity cards from the security
officers, were allowed to engage in their livelihood in the
area since yesterday (18). Accordingly, 73 farmers commenced
work.
Officials of the Farmers Association have welcomed the
security forces decision, calling it a vital confidence
building measure between the civilian community and the security
