Special arrangements for cultivation in Jaffna HSZ

Government has made arrangements for farmers who own paddy lands in the Ariyalai East High Security Zone (HSZ) to commence cultivation. Earlier, access was restricted in the area due to security concerns.

Security forces confirmed that, the present security situation is satisfactory and farmers can be allowed to engage in cultivation.

According to the Security Forces Headquarters Jaffna (SFHQJ), farmers have been allowed to cultivate 103 acres of land between the Ariyalai railway track and Jaffna-Kandy Road (A-9) from August 17, the Ministry of Defence announced.

Farmers, after obtaining special identity cards from the security officers, were allowed to engage in their livelihood in the area since yesterday (18). Accordingly, 73 farmers commenced work.

Officials of the Farmers’ Association have welcomed the security forces’ decision, calling it a vital confidence building measure between the civilian community and the security forces, sources said. (www.news.lk)
