Lal Kantha alleges war effort hit by ruined economy

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parliamentarian Lal Kantha yesterday alleged in Parliament that the war effort is being undermined by an economy that is ruined.

“When the army is trying to fight the LTTE, the president is doing his best to damage the war effort by ruining the Sri Lankan economy,” Lal Kantha said. “Mihin Lanka which is his pet project destroyed 3.2 billion rupees and he is continually spending vast amounts of money on unnecessary projects. How can an army wage a war, when the administration of a country is ruined?” the JVP MP questioned.

He also emphasised the importance of implementing the 17th amendment. He added that the importance of this is doubled at a time when there is a rule of emergency in the country.

“When there is a rule of emergency, it is natural that democracy might be affected. That is why we must implement the 17th amendment that would counter balance the emergency laws,” he said. “When the government is not implementing the 17th amendment, many people local and foreign are apprehensive about it,” he added.

The 17th amendment has restricted the power of the president, taking from him the power to appoint and fire officials. That is very healthy for a democracy,” Lal Kantha said. The JVP MP also commented that certain rulings of the Supreme Court cannot be accepted as just.

“It is trying to do every one’s job and sometimes it is very difficult to accept decisions that are given,” he said. “But we cannot say anything about them because of legal action,” he added
