HSPA- The technology behind mobile broadband

High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) is a mainstream technology offering mobile broadband facilities. It’s the most cost effective way for broadband technology and allows broadband to be accessed even in the rural areas of the country.

Senior Vice President- Engineering, Dialog Telekom, Shayam Majeed speaking at the GSMAP conference, explained the benefits of HSPA and the landmark reach they have achieved with HSPA technology.

“3G/WCDMA-HSPA technology is driving the global uptake of mobile broadband services,” he said, “HSPA delivers a similar boost to WCDMA, as EDGE does to GSM.” There are three mobile providers in the island who offer 3G technology, along with GSM. Dialog was the 4th entrant to the mobile market in 1994, but has, since 2000, emerged to be the market leader. They introduced 3G or 3rd Generation technology in 2006, after the Telecommunication Regulations Commission of Sri Lanka approved 3G licenses and have seen a phenomenal success in the demand for 3G services.

He went on to explain the benefits of 3G technology to the customer, stating that better spectral efficiency, higher quality voice, introduction of higher data rates, advantages of starting early and bridging the digital gap makes the investment in 3G technology worthwhile.

High speed broadband has enabled Dialog to take mobile broadband all across the country. Availability of wireless broadband, as opposed to fixed broadband, has also enabled rural communities to have internet access, which is beneficial to development.

With facilities such as video calling, large download capabilities, live mobile updates, high speed downloads and business facilities available, 3G technology has become a vital part of mobile technology.

“Dialog has now entered the 3.75G era,” he said, “With a downlink of 14.4Mbps and an uplink of 5.76Mbps.” The demonstration of the HSUPA 5.76 Mbps was conducted at the conference in collaboration with Huawei Technologies.
