UN vacates Kilinochchi

The United Nations staff operating in Kilinochchi completely withdrew themselves from the area last morning, UN Spokesman in Colombo, Gordon Weiss said. He added that around 35 UN aid workers, including 20 locals who left Kilinochchi, will execute their duties from Vavuniya in accordance to the government order.

Weiss warned that the situation in the area might worsen due to the on going hostilities and the departure of aid workers.

“The situation in Kilinochchi is not favourable for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and it might get worse due to the increasing hostilities between government forces and the LTTE,” he said.
