Police given time to answer in Rosy, Chandrani FR case

The Supreme Court has given the respondents, Bambalapitiya OIC Upul Seneviratna, IGP Victor Perera and the Attorney General, time to file answers in Fundamental Right (FR) Applications filed by UNP Parliamentarian Chandrani Bandara and Colombo West Organiser Rosy Senanayake.

Senior State Counsel Riyaz Hamza moved for time to file answers on behalf of respondents when the cases came before the Supreme Court. The Bench comprising Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, and Justices Raja Fernando and P.A. Ratnayaka gave them time till January 21, 2009.

Sujeewa Senasingha, instructed by Integrated Associates, appearing for petitioners told the Court that he is not objecting to give time or respondents to file answers.

Serasinghe further submitted to Court that the UNP, together with certain other opposition political parties, organised a lawful peaceful protest against the rising cost of living and the escalating fuel prices on June 3, 2008 and some Police stations made applications to Colombo Chief Magistrate to stop the said protest. The Chief Magistrate rejected those applications.

When the petitioners were participating in the said protest, the first respondent had insulted them and abused them in filth, the counsel said.
