Sri Lanka Army: Clifford Cup Boxing Champs

The victorious Army boxers with Dian Gomes the president of ABA

Despite the heavy demands and responsibilities of the Sri Lanka Army who are engaged in battle at a decisive stage of the war in the north it was most creditable for their boxers to emerge overall champions in the 81st Clifford Cup Boxing Meet which concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday. Though Sri Lanka Army ‘A’ won the championship with an overall total of 38 points, Slimline Sports Club’s ace boxer Manju Wanniarachchi won the K. Karunaratne Memorial Cup for the best boxer after his bout against D.M. Samarasekara of Slimline ‘B’ who was adjudged the best loser. Both boxers fought each other in the Bantamweight Under 54Kgs bout.

Sri Lanka Army had so much to cheer about when their boxers representing the ‘B’ team emerged overall runners-up with 26 points. Slimline ‘A’ won the third place with 25 points. Slimline’s S.A.N. Weerarathna won the award for the best boxer in the women’s category in her bout against S.T.S. Nirosha of Sri Lanka Army who was named the best loser in the Light Bantamweight Under 52kgs.
