in Parliament, a disgrace – UNP Leader
Vinayagamorthy Muralitharan does not deserve to be a Member
of Parliament, and is a disgrace to the Parliamentary system,
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday charged.
This sudden appointment will make us the laughing stock of
the Commonwealth, he added.
“Karuna was arrested in the UK and served six months
in prison. And this convicted criminal has been appointed
as a National List MP,” Wickremesinghe said. “This
man cannot even enter the Commonwealth Parliament, because
he served in a British prison,” he pointed out.
The Sri Lankan Parliament is rapidly losing its privileges,
and with appointments of this nature, it has lost its dignity,
the Opposition Leader further said. Meanwhile, SLFP-M Leader
Mangala Samaraweera also criticised Karuna’s appointment
claiming that he has not fully entered the democratic process
yet. “Karuna still keeps a band of armed cadres; he still
recruits children and train them to be killers. So, in essence
he is still a terrorist,” he said.
Following on the same theme, UNP MP Palitha Range Bandara
added that the TMVP also possesses suicide cadres. “The
Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP) inquired from us who else has
suicide cadres. If you analyse from where the suicide cadres
come from, you would see that most of them are from the east.
And, everyone knows with whom the LTTE eastern cadres are
with,” he said and alleged, “These groups hangout
with the government.”
