ACCA Graduates begin a new journey

  • World prize winner has sights set on becoming corporate lawyer
  • Sri Lanka produces two outstanding Affiliates

ACCA Sri Lanka held its Graduation recently at a gala ceremony at the Cinnamon Grand where a world prize winner, top paper winners, affiliates CAT (Certified Accounting Technician) graduates and diplomates were felicitated. Sheranka Madanayake who won the World Prize for Advanced Performance Management concludes that the ACCA qualification will help her understand business reality in order to devise practical legal solutions in her journey towards becoming a corporate lawyer.

Having also obtained an B.Sc (Hons) in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University UK through ACCA’s unique partnership with that university and which compliments her Bachelor of Laws from the University of London, Sheranka says, “ACCA’s international recognition and excellent reputation reinforced my attraction to the excellent financial coverage of the syllabus and ability to specialise in areas like tax and audit.” Thivanka Ranjeewa Hewage and Mustansir Zakirhusain were adjudged Sri Lanka’s Most outstanding Affiliates for December 2007 and June 2008 respectively with Amba Research Lanka awarding special trophies to the two awardees. A total of 51 awardees were felicitated by ACCA Sri Lanka.

Chief Guest, Chairman of Ceylon Hospitals PLC Ajith Tudawe exampled the multi-dimensional capabilities of the ACCA qualification by using his own experiences at Ceylon Hospitals as an example. “ACCA today is a globally recognised qualification which will open many doors for you,” he stated. “Not only will you stand to be recognised as those belonging to an elite and prestigious business & finance community but you have also obtained an international passport. Being a member of the same profession who ventured into the business world, in my late 20’s, as a Group Director of the family owned business – Tudawe Brothers and heading the Durdans Hospital in my mid 30’s, both businesses, I have valuable experience that could enhance your contribution to the society.” Sharing some of his most passionate insights, Tudawe elaborated that the Durdans’ story talks of how financial expertise can be the foundation for breakthrough marketing innovations.

“The role of today’s financial wizards is no longer confined to their speciality area, but they can use their knowledge to create greater shareholder wealth effectively. With the financial foundation you have acquired, if you focus on the required soft and hard business skills and competencies, you could aim for the top tier of the organisational structure.”

Marketing Executive from ACCA Headquarters in the UK, Lindsay Taylor who was Guest of Honour opined that with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) being adopted in more countries, knowledge of international standards is becoming increasingly valuable. “Also, passing examinations is only one component of gaining the ACCA qualification. The application of the technical knowledge to real life situations is what distinguishes a professional qualification from a purely academic one. It is this ability to apply your skills in the workplace that employers invest in and truly value.”
