Expired Blood Packs Scandal

Ministry Secretary delaying report’s response

By Kushali Atukorale
Ministry of Healthcare & Nutrition has asked for two weeks from the Auditor General Department (AGD) to notify the action it has taken on the investigation report sent by the AGD pertaining to the usage of Expired Blood Packets.

Secretary- Ministry of Healthcare & Nutrition, Dr. Athula Kahadaliyanage told The Bottom Line that the: “AGD wanted me to send the Ministry’s decision on October 6,, but I was not able to do so since the investigations conducted by the Ministry concluded only a few days back, hence, we have requested for two weeks, since its essential to go through the investigations reports properly, before making a decision,” he said.

He also said that, “Within two weeks we are going to submit the Ministry’s decision to the AGD and the Ministry’s investigation report to the Public Service Commission, as it’s a very sensitive case,” Dr. Kahadaliyanage asserted.

The discovery that the National Blood Bank had used expired blood packets, resulted in the interdiction of the Director and a doctor of the Blood Bank. According to the AGD’s investigations, 243 expired blood packets were used, while some were distributed to other hospitals, after removing the code containing the expiry date and other relevant facts.
